Its a reality, though. We do judge based on beauty and it affects our subject on a subconscious level. You have to admire them from not only recognizing all their talents(including their appearances) but also combining and selling it in a marketable way. I mean, there are plenty of beautiful women(especially with care and good makeup), and there are plenty of talented and beautiful women, but only a few have managed to actually capitalize on all they have. Yes, never said they are not talented, i say only that talent is only an ingredient of the show. Mine was onl y a suggestion. I like this kind of baroque arrangmentand this clip is very scenic but i am a bit annoyed by the old same fact (beauty=success). PS see also "Quartetto Euforia" from italy. I am not in any way comparing my worldly skills to that of Beethoven, but when I play, I literally stop thinking about everything, except the music. The most significant pieces of music are not those born through pre-conceived meaning or purpose, but rather those who have meaning attached to them as a separate entity. I am a music scholar, but I think that the music speaks in its own ways. Music doesn't need lyrics to be something more then just music. This song, with or without lyrics, is one of the greatest songs composed by one man. This music isn't simple. It would need a complex genius to write this song. Fast! This is one of the slowest I've heard (and softest). Only slower rendition I heard was too slow, IMHO. Even Karajan and the Berlin Phil. play slightly faster! Not that there's a huge difference in most of the tempos - slight variations and emphases can mean so much.

well you apparently hear it reall badly...because beethoven meant for it to be this way...i have played this in my orchestra (Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra) and I have seen the conductor's score. it's played perfectly fine. the tempo is supposed to start out really slow and then speed up a bit when the 1st violins enter.

XD, well, when I get into it, or when most players get into playing, they sway or move around because they somewhat have connected with the piece, and have reached a certain level where they'd practically scream out loud if they could. I'm also going to have to agree with DiVeronica. This movement is stunningly beautiful, yes, but pleasant surely doesn't embody what it evokes. The theme screams, though sanely, a feeling of longing. Grayson: have you listened to the 4th movement? I'm sure you have. Well, listen to it again and contrast it with the 3rd movement. This does not portray a feeling of insanity. To me, it portrays a recollection of beauty and then realization that it can't be yours (Clara)...but it's controlled.

I played this at the concerto competition at Interlochen when i was 18 as well (many years ago....i lost to Zuill Bailey). It certainly takes aggresion at that section to make it 'pop'. And as a cellist your opinion would outweigh most others so i wouldnt worry about entitlement.

I haven't mastered the piece myself, only have played it through for enjoyment - however I find at that tempo that I'm mostly skimming the notes during that section and not achieving the tenuto effect he probably desired. However I don't feel mature enough to learn the piece (am only 18 years of age), so I guess I'm not really entitled to give my opinion.

Thankyou. I was beginning to feel lonely. I didn't really find the section difficult tempo-wise (the 6ths are hard to play in tune)so im sure Rostropovich isnt struggling. It is definitely interpretive.

Actually, I agree with you regarding the tempo. The melody isn't any different (only instrument wise), so why should the tempo be any slower? However the relative section in the cello part isn't easy to pull off well at that tempo (in my opinion), so I guess I understand it being slower. As for questioning Rostropovich - look at it this way, at least you're not blindly admiring his performance.

The tempo slows considerably at 4:53 (the cello horn duet) in spite of what some youtubers say. Listen to it there and compare it to the opening. I know it's deliberate but i humbly disagree with the interpretation. It drags for me and seems to for the french horn player as well.

yes there are videos with syncing problems, I've seen them, and yes no musician plays a piece the same way as another musician. But, the way that the music in this video accents, crescendos, diminuendos, speeds up, slows down is exactly the same as the CD version with Leonard Rose and the Philadelphia Orchestra

ya know i dont think so. videos can have audio video sync problems. ive seen it happen through encoding and what not where the sync goes in and out. however through experience from being a cellist for quite sometime i can tell it is indeed that person playing the music. i can tell in specifics of when he plays an open A for instance, or hitting the harmonic A at 3:25. musicians dont play the same song the same way.

My POV is that Alkan might be striving for a more raw form of beauty, rather than an abstract form - raw being manifested in the endless variety of performance elements built on relatively simple chords. He capitalised on the resource that he was so blessed to have FULL access to, that is technique and ways of playing a tune. Of course my argument might be wrong, but I hope it presents another way of looking at virtuosity for all those haters of 'showing off'-virtuosity out there.

For those who HAVE tried to look into his musicality and have not found beauty, I hope you'd take a second try. Alkan does have a style of short motifs and bursts, which may sound like random bangings, but looking at the bigger picture I do find beauty in his virtuoso works. For those who are more concerned about complexity of chord progressions defining musical depth, I must say while good command of complex harmony does entail musical depth, good music does not necessarily need complex harmony

Not to say that Chopin, Brahms etc. weren't phenomenal pianists, but we have to admit to the transcendental level of pianists like Liszt and Alkan - which is why the superultravirtuoso avenue of expression manifested in the music in this video is only open to those selected few. For Alkan's Op. 39, I urge haters to look past the virtuosity and into the music he is trying to convey - it is ridiculous that he wrote such a GIANT Opus just to show off his skill.

Of course there must have been an element of desire for showing off for these composers. But surely after a while they must have gotten used to showing off? And surely we can see that virtuoso elements persist in their music from young to old. That is why i feel virtuosity, while most obviously having the use of showing off, also should be treated as another avenue of musical expression.

After reading alot of comments about alkan's emptiness, i'd like to present my view. I feel that virtuoso writing is just another way of expressing your music especially if you have the ability to execute the music you've written. Such is the case for Liszt, Alkan, Thalberg and the likes - these virtuoso elements are present in their music because they can execute it themselves, and thus chose to use them to achieve the musical EFFECT that they desire.

For a minute there, I thought you were being serious! Apparently having "analyzed the score in considerable detail" gives you more credibility than one who can PERFORM it. I couldn't imagine this piece being playing any slower! Perhaps only if one does not have the technical proficiency... I think Hamelin's interpretation is wonderful.
