The sequencer is playing the same bassline as Mark King does FYI. He uses the Seq. to enchance the basspart, and also its played an octave lower than the bass which will give it the "boost". Like someone else said it's a feature Level 42 has been using since Hot Water, and they use it on alot of the newer songs. But make no mistake He's playing the bass LIVE all the way.

Yeah man, but he's still playing bass. The midi is no huge secret. It's a big part of MK's sound on a lot of songs. Hot Water is probably the best example. But to imagine that he can't play the line all the way through if he wanted to is pretty ridiculous. I know that's not what you're saying, but of course some idiot will think that. Another good reference, same beat, maybe(?) without a click/sequencer augment; check out Eyes Waterfalling here on youtube.

I disagree... The bass is playing throughout the whole song. The Keyboard part is in a higher octave, only on "&a" not on the down beat. Mark's bass has such a distinct sound, and I hear it throughout the entire song. Note wise, it's a simple bass line, but the rate of the right hand slapping and the slow singing juxtaposed makes this much harder than it seems.

Level 42 was and is for me one of the greatest funkbands of the world. Only now Mark is playing a Status bass(Nice guitar) but the old songs must be played on the original Jaydee bassguitar!! And the last album dissapoints me. Why? The sound of the status bass is an hifi sound, not a incredible bass low sound of the Jaydee bass!

This cat is one of the best! I've been a fan of his for many years and I've seen him many times at the Baked Potato here in L.A. The best show was one with Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather, and Eddie Van Halen stopped by and played a few tunes! When Jimmy plays live at the BP, he uses a Walter Woods head and 2 single 12 cabs - and gets an amazing tone! I'm sure it's true that he goes direct into the board when he's with JT or when recording, as that Alembic sounds great as is.

I'm an engineer and I used to work with Jimmy in the studio in the 80's... a few records but lots of advertising jingles... He still looks the same as he did 20 years ago! During the "slap-happy" bass playing in the 80's I used to love it when a jingle producer would ask Jimmy to do slap bass and he'd simply say: "I don't slap!" Rock on FLIM!!!

Jimmy exclusively plays and treasures his Alembic five string Series II bass. He's actually the very first low B five string bass player ever. As for amplification: Jimmy told me that he does not use and like bass amplifiers. He just wants the pure sound of his Alembic bass so he plugs his bass straight into the PA. The only thing he brings to any show is his Alembic, an external power supply (required for an Alembic Series bass) and a few cables. That's all he needs.

i have always liked the style of Mark, and that Alembic bass sound is absolutely superb. i would not compare Mark to Marcus, they are totally different styles and musical venues. They are both excellent in their respective venues. This is a form of art, there is no "one is better than the other".
