What a beautiful arrangement of this piece. Thanks for the post. Mak I usually give little attention to the comments but you are very correct. I've tended to acquiese to Marsalis' views and style of playing which no doubt are great, but Roy's performance of this classic is, well a masterpiece. The ending from 4:37 on is pure virtuoso, and on the flugelhorn too. Outstanding!

Stomvi are not good trumpets. Maurice recently said in May 2008 : "I've been disappointed by the attitude of Stomvi that i helped to launch, 15 years ago." These people used him to sell their awful stuff.

I found this by an accident, looking up heifetz-hora staccato, then another trumpett, eventually finding this guy... and now i ask you? Doe you have to be named Andre to be one of the few best musicians in the world? this guy is a shock...the triler in ?staccato? is so soft and free, yet strong... like on a violin...wow

Don't diminish the ability of Dizzy to improvise over the form of the tune. As amazing as Maurice is/was, he couldn't possibly improvise over any set of chord changes like Dizzy. In Dizzy's prime, he could have torn through this tune like no other; he simply was trying to make music with a fellow trumpeter, with whom he shared very little in common musically.

Andre is the man. I dont know how dizzy ever made it. He plays so sloppy that it isnt even enjoyable. Im sorry, but I cant take the way he always hits a wrong note, or cracks a note. There are much better then dizzy, he should have been a no namer, but he had the bent horn, big cheek thing to make him known. Anyway, maurice rocks as always

I have the exact mute, which I bought in the early 1960s at Manny's in NYC. It is not aluminum, but steel, chrome plated. It has a stem which is removable. There are no manufacturer markings on the mute, but it does say "made in Sweden". I have used this mute a lot and only had to replace the cork once. It cost me about $40.00 in the 60's, which was a lot of bread in those days. The stem still stays put in whatever position you put it in. I play it without the stem. No other mute comes close.

Wynton's solos are so complex. I really think his horn makes a very minimal difference. Maybe a slight tone change, but the emotion put into his solos is far beyond the mechanical wynton of the past. Now his solos have theory, instead of flurry. But, he was probably a better trumpet player than me at age 10. But, I guess that really applies to all of us who can compare.

I feel sorrow and wonderment toward those that aren't moved by this performance. Chops and technique mean nothing. I couldn't care less how high or fast Wynton plays. yes, let's reduce the hundreds of years of history of the blues to one scale without explaining its origins at all. great idea. don't worry about how the minor pentatonic scale was used for centuries in traditional african music and the addition of the tritone came from guitar players bending the fourth note. as long as you play those six notes in some order, you're playing the blues. don't worry about putting any feeling into the music.

Don't know what brand (that is assumining that it isn't a homemade mute or custom job), but it looks and and sounds like a tight cup mute (or closed cup mute), since the "cup" is right up against the bell. I've heard people comment about how Maynard's playing was in poor taste or that his sound is forced and other comments. I must honestly say he is one of the most musical brass players I have ever heard. He truly is a great model for expression and music as an art. I thought at first he had a bent-down mouthpiece, but it looks like a standard V. Bach type, straight. NO ONE plays jazz trumpet the way Freddie Hubbard did..He has been in my life for 32 years.. I was turned on to him when I was 18 and I never let go.. I heard him "Live" 5 times. One of those times was in late 80's, early 90's in Tulsa Oklahoma of all places.. I had 3 Dominos franchises at the time so being the fan I was I made arrangements to fee FH and his group. As a jazz trumpeter myself, It was the most incredible night of my life. Hung out with him back stage. Amazing. RIP FH

Man guys in this time were amazing, there are amazing players these days too, but most of them seem to think speed is the most important, and lose the amazing tone in the process, I may only be 15 but I can definitly appreciate the greatness in this, and I totally wish I had been alive back then! While working at a theater a few years earlier than this tape I heard all three concerts in which he played 4 concerti in each. Each night (not each concerto) he would make just one slightly out of tune note or one missed attack. So near to perfection it was almost immeasurable. He was touring with a phenomenal organist who sandwiched a solo piece in each half of the concert.

I heard Christian Steele Perkins play this in a lunch time concert on radio 3 a while back and i don't think he played 1 right note, Maurice does a wonderful job of a very difficult piece, having tried to play it on many occasions i've only managed to get to the end of the 1st movement once without falling on the floor in a heap.

Man sollte aber bedenken, dass dies eine Live Aufnahme ist. Ich möchte den Trompeter sehen, der dieses schwierige Konzert absolut fehlerlos spielt. well, just start out with a good embrasure and find a good sound, with plenty of air support...then move on to learning all your major scales and even some blues scales and improvise a little bit. once you know all of your scales it will be a lot easier to move around on the trumpet and it will make things a bit more fun

Oh now, I am almost positive the year is 1983 maybe early 1984. When I first saw this it was at a friends house in California in the early 80's. He had recorded this performance and we both had it for years but lost track of it until this posting. GREAT STUFF man.. Freddie is THEE MAN. No one has played jazz trumpet like him, he has left an amazing body of work.

This seems, to me, to be quite a supportable view (although we musn't forget Armstong, Eldridge or Charlie Shavers either! And Kenny Dorham and Clark Terry are ESSENTIAL too. So are Booker Little and Chet, for that matter; and everybody should listen to Tony Fruscella). Dizzy, though, it seems to me, was indeed "The Greatest Trumpet of them All" as one of his Verve albums was entitled.

As long as you listen for the chord changes, and you know the head...you can play anything...Jazz is meant to be unique every time. My boyfriend plays guitar and he played the real guitarist (reel, real?? hhmm), which was originally a bossa nova, but he played it faster as a samba, and it kicked ASS! I love it! :)

um did noone notice that he just stopped in the middle of the head and and made a face at the drummer and the pianist had to pick up where he left off? hes clearly not on top form in this clip, his solos aren't half as good as normal.
