By: WeeDeus. on 04 Nov 08, 21:12:41
"You are welcome" is "Jsi vítaný" in Czech. It's used only in literature, no Czech will ever say it, it's just too archaic and formal. "Není za?" is a phrase used as a response when someone thanks you for something, but pople rather say "Neni za co" or "Jo, v pohod?" instead.

I think 'Hello' ...
By: shizo668. on 23 Dec 08, 07:19:18
I think 'Hello' would be better transliterated as 'ZDRA-stvui-tyeh'. "How are you" is a form of polite address in English, while in Russian it's informal. So it sounds awkward and unnatural, like: "What's up?! I'm very well, thank you. How about yourself?" Bathroom was translated wrong. They're actually asking for the shower room (?????? ???????). And although sometimes they're in the same place, 'bathroom' would be better translated as '??????' (too-ah-LYET).

By: Zaynaq. on 06 Dec 08, 02:18:34
Yugoslavian/South Slavic languages are absolutely Slavic! :) I myself have not studied them so I could not tell you how they compare to Russian - but my Slovakian (which is grouped with Czech and Polish as being a West Slavic language) friend told me that when he was in Bosnia he didn't have much trouble with it.

By: Zaynaq. on 04 Dec 08, 17:29:58
it wouldn't be too hard to learn Russian if you're a Polish speaker, and not too hard to learn Polish if you're Russian, but I think Polish has a small amount of more archaic grammar that isn't used in East Slavic languages like Russian and Ukrainian (Ukrainian is in a class of its own lol). Belarusian and Polish share enough vocabulary that I think they can understand each other to an extent, at least that is what a Pole told me once.

By: hikitsurisan. on 29 Dec 08, 12:54:26
"You are welcome" is an American expression, although it has started to be used by some British speakers. It might have been useful to add that "prego" is a response to "grazia" or when handing something to someone (I presume that is correct?) rather than what someone might say as a visitor enters their house ("Welcome!"). (continued)

By: ikmarchini. on 16 Dec 08, 22:16:58
English speakers can't understand the polite form in European languages. We dropped the polite form (Thou) centuries ago tho it can still be found in Shakespeare and the Bible. In Italian, as in most European languages, one begins with the polite, formal, third person form of Lei. This is for business and commercial speaking, church, and with older or official people. One continues in Lei until the recipient asks for informal or second person. How many close friends can a tourist have?

By: matiasprz. on 31 Dec 08, 12:17:19
I think you got it all wrong buddy. Usted is the formal form for YOU. The informal form for YOU in spanish is either Tú or Vos (Tú in most of the world, Vos mostly in Argentina, uruguay and Colombia). VOSOTROS is the same as USTEDES, and it means YOU ALL. USTEDES is used everywhere and VOSOTROS is used only in spain. We latin americans understand it perfectly, just don't use it. Despite all of this, we spanish speaking people understand our different "spanishes" perfectly.

Actually, Im argentinian and I think I've never seen an argentinian calling a foreigner "tú", no matter how little spanish he spoke. If you travel to a country where VOS is vastly used, they'll expect you to respond to VOS. You can always ask to be addressed in the TÚ form, but in my experience, foreigners always end up adopting VOS.

VOSOTROS is the same as USTEDES, and it means YOU ALL (or You plural). USTEDES is used everywhere and VOSOTROS is used only in spain. We latin americans understand it perfectly, just don't use it. By: mw3321. on 17 Dec 08, 01:13:21
That's correct, but asking "Where is the bathroom please?" is kind of like "Where can I wash my hands please?". In neither sentence the toilet is specifically mentioned, but it's implied. It's a bit complicated, as the appropriateness of the German as well as the English phrases depends on the situation and other factors.

By: mw3321. on 16 Dec 08, 16:44:19
It can mean the same. If you want to be polite, you could say "Wo ist bitte das Badezimmer?", but saying "Kann ich bitte Ihr WC/Ihre Toilette benutzen?" works just as fine, if not better. The first is more suitable for when you're at someone's place, the second works for that as well but can also be used in a store or museum, for example.

I was born into the Greek language. It IS Geia Sou, G=Y sounds. The way you have spelled it (Yia Su) is incorrect, Gia or Yia means FOR. So, Yia Su would mean "for you." Geia Sou, is correct, because Geia Sou is derived from Stin Geia Sas, which is "To Your Health!" It's an expression said at toasts, it was shortened to Geia Sou or Geia Sas depending on the formality. Hence, Geia Sou.

-It's true that you can't hear many people esp. young people- saying "Allaha?smarlad?k" nowadays. I think more common ways to say goodbye was mentioned in earlier posts. -And last but not least: bathroom=banyo, toilet=tuvalet true, but "where is the bathroom" is "tuvalet nerede?" A tourist asking "banyo nerede?" at an airport for example would make me think they want take a shower. Just like you can't say "wheres the toilet" inEnglish because it's considered rude (yeah I know from experience)

You misinform our foreign friends who try to learn a few words here. I think much of the confusion comes from regional differences. -We do use "pardon" but to play it safe, you can say "afedersiniz" esp. if youre not in cities. -If youre going to use "sa?ol" instead of "te?ekkür ederim", keep in mind that the proper way to say it is "sa?olun" as long as youre not beyond formality and politeness with the person youre addressing. (Ugh this is going to be a long post it seems...)

To the people who say this is nothing like Turkish they speak, sorry but this is the proper Turkish. Only much slower but that's a given, considering this video is made for instruction purposes. You can't expect people who try to teach a couple words in a foreign language to slur their words like we do in daily life.
