I think it's so awesome that Willie doesn't play some fancy $3,000 signature Willie guitar, just that old clunker he's played forever. And he does more with it than anybody else could with a $3,000 guitar. Willie is just real. I hope I can see him live while he's still performing. It must be such a great experience.

If anyone likes this style of music, you should listen to the americana station. Wow that will take ya back.todays country or most of it is southern rock period. There are a FEW good ones. I agree, I am 29 years old and choose to go see the greats before they retire. I've not seen Willie or Kris, maybe they'll come to Indiana. Of course, I branch out to other venues as well. Alman Brothers and Bob Dylan have been a couple of great performances.

Thank you so much for posting this, I have loved Kristofferson for over thirty years, got in to Willie Nelson about 20 years ago and Jonny Cash is like a best loved uncle uncle I've known hinm since a baby. Kris has a way of writing like a classsic poet and willie sings across the beat so well it is now an artform in its own right. If anybody has got more please get them up here. Zarec, I'd liove to see them maybe a few younger artist so seek them out to duet before it's too late?

I used to go to the folk festivals and coffee houses to hear her in the eighties and nineties. She always does a beautiful show and often brings along other acts with her. I've seen her play with the Chieftans, The Crickets (she's good on the strat!) John Prine, and many more. Other Voices Other Rooms is a FABULOUS album of folk covers. She's also a terrific songwriter. Bob Dylan is a fan of this version of his song.

mo ghile mear is a great irish song, being sung here in irish by three irish singers (mary black, v.1; iarla o lionard v.2 and karen casey,v.5) and three scottish gaelic singers (mary ann kennedy, v.3, karen matheson v.4 and allan macdonald, v.6) - which may be why the three verses sung by the irish singers sound a bit more flowing, but it's an excellent song, excellent recording, excellent harmonies, excellent programme!

This is wonderful...thank you! I don't think this aired in the US, this was a lucky find.I really liked the simplicity of this presentation, in contrast to the shinier presentations of Celtic music in the US. Not that the musicians in the Americanized groups aren't talented, but I think this simplicity is much truer to the Gaels and their music.

So true, Darrell's version is much better. I like Patty Loveless and she comes from Pike County not too far up 119 from us here in Harlan County. but Darrell makes it uniquely harlan by using Tillie helton and Catrons Mountain. Patty changes that in her song and makes it less uniquely Harlan in my opinion. Darrell wrote and performs a great song...

I've hear all the versions of this song. It's just a down right good song...Patty Loveless, although she definately has done her share of commercial stuff has got a voice made for this kinda stuff- I recall her doing harmonies with Ralph Stanley on some bluegrass special- powerful voice. I just saw him yesterday at our family reunion. I only get to see him a few times a year because we live a few hours away, but still in KY. And I think the original writer's version of a song IS the best, because that's just how that person meant it to be. How it's meant to be is the way it's supposed to be. Mr Wallas is technically right. Resonator guitar just means it has a resonator. A Dobro is a brand name which is now owned by Gibson. The difference with the nut is usually that you have a "squareneck" (with the tall nut) in bluegrass, and "roundneck" (more like a standard guitar nut/neck) which is more common in blues.

Anybody know what kind of small pipes those are? I like the low tone better than most of the small pipes I've heard. I love this sound. I'm a Cajun so I didn't grow up with pipes but I can imagine that Cajun music would sound good on these pipes. I can see something akin to Galatians pipes and accordions playing together.

In all diffrent versions i ever heard, their is nothing especially said that the two soldiers and/or the drummer boy are killed. the phrase of the shillaleigh "coming over their heads" is nothing more than beating them so that the soldiers flee, as a picture of the free man who wont bow a superior power. to interpret the shillaleigh fight as a action of murdering the soldiers is in my opinion a bit to harsh.

No, the song says:"With our trusty shillalieghs we bashed in their heads." It doesn't say that the drummer was spared. I've seen pictures of walking sticks and their actually made of pretty solid wood, perfectly capable of dispatching someone if you hit them over the head with it. Anyway, it's just a song. A violent song, and a way different version of the Little Drummer Boy than what I'm used to, but just a song.

The song then goes on to say, "AND the little, wee drummer we flattened his pow." This implies that his fate is different from the Sergeant and Corporal. I also doubt weather a shilaliegh blow to the head would've killed the two soldiers. They are made from blackthorn which is quite light.
