I worked for Bell Labs in the early 90s performing acoustic research for the Navy. I can assure anyone that a sharp noise like gunfire or a firecracker provides a unique acoustic signature. To say "We just don't think that the recording actually captured the shots" is bullshit and shows an amateur with no knowledge of acoustic physics. The signal to noise ratio for this type of event is dramatic and would not be confused with "background noise".
