very nice for their ages. the entrances to many of the long notes are smeared due to some entering at different times when they should be playing at the same moment. I'm sure they'll work on making that more unified. Perhaps if they didn't sit what looks like too far each other it would help them sense cues like body language and breathing? There's so much importance with that in music making with others!

Thanks for posting. I love this piece. I had the pleasure of seeing the Minnesota Orchestra play this (under Osmo) in 2004. It was such a moving performance, I was in tears at the end and I don't think anyone made a sound for about 15 seconds after the final cutoff. Everyone had to let it sink in. Truly amazing.

It's wonderful to see a video of this magnificent symphony on YouTube, even if it's only the finale! The performance is pretty good, too. I prefer the ending a bit slower, which makes it sound a bit more grand and powerful to me, but it's still well-played. I've never been able to watch the timpani duel (~6min. in) on video before - very impressive. Thanks for uploading this! I've wanted to see this on video for a while!

I am sure he enjoyed Candide more than West Side Story. I love both have seen the film of WSS , about 11 times . Candide is great but due to complicated plot it has never gained much popularity. Christa Ludwig was always great, her singing in Fidelio with Klemperer conducting has to be the finest version ever.

Where is this orchestra from? This version of Glinka's overture is one of the best I've ever listened. They are playing the way it has to be played. I see people commenting it is too fast or too loud or whatever... That's it. What do you expect? Adagio Grazioso? Terrific, exciting playing. Great contrast, dynamic range! I do not know if this orchestra is able to present a great interpretation for a Brahms' symphony, but this overture is great!

This whole orchestral team is boisterously enthusiastic, and the k-drummer is definitely very excited! He could have been just a tad quieter (NOT much), while the whole piece could go a tiny bit slower (again, just a little...). Otherwise, superb (and I also agree with Meister Lim adding the fifes in two places - although not in the original score, that addition does wonders!!!). The players are so in control of that piece - a performance just at the edge but which succeeds brilliantly!!!

i think you misunderstood what i said: i was commenting on the fact that i personally have never heard an asian person sing opera, not on the fact that i didn't think an asian person could sing it well: clearly they can do it beautifully, as this guy does. also, i feel that he gives one of the best performances i have ever heard of largo al factotum. i have respect for people of all cultures and languages singing opera. i wasn't trying to offend anyone, sorry if it came across that way.

Couldn't agree more, I have never heard an Asian person interpret Figaro before, and he does it SO well! I, too, like this guy better than others I have heard, except for Thomas Hampson, whose diction and speed is (I feel) flawless, particularly so at the end of largo al f. and who is a fantastic performer, too!

Sorry- but it only looks 'weird' if you are ignorant about music, and racist/limited in your thinking. Paul Robeson, Jessye Norman, Marian Anderson, Kiri Te Kanawa - all of them were/are opera singers, and none of them were European. I'm black, live in the States (where supposedly we're all morons when it comes to culture), and I think his enunciation and elocution are spot on. Opera is by and for everyone- not just Europeans.

It's not exactly the dance, it's the whole way he does it, plus to his own music. I'm no against conductors having a bit of fun; check, for example, "La Belle Helene" under Harnoncourt, now this guy really is having fun :)! But it seems natural there. In Bernstein's case, it looks a bit overacted :)! Still, I would like to point out that it's just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less :).

Bernstein kinda bugs me here :-)! I love Candide but this (and his studio recordings of Candide and West Side Story) aren't exatly good, overblown to say the least. And the way he jumps and hops, brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, a lot of selfloving. Gedda is wonderful, but I still prefer the original William Olvis as the Governer, he sounds nastier :-)! Still just my opinion.

I first heard this in Manchester in 1959 - by the Halle Orchestra. I was given the Ticket, went under sufferance, some other work, getting it's first performance in Manchester, some Russian Guy called Shostakovich (his 5th Symphony!!) and braced myself for a disctdant evening. That night altered my whole listening to Music, as little did I know or understand the significance. I now believe that night to be The best Concert of my life! Jollychappy.

On the opposite end of the spectrum we would probably find someone like Gustav Holst. He knows what he's doing, but doesn't know what he should be doing, and so he just keeps repeating the same phrase. But Gustav Holst had much less talent than Nielsen.

The string parts in the 2nd movement sound like something out of a Metallica song. I'm troubled with Nielsen's way of composing. He doesn't give me the impression of a rational composer who knows exactly what he's doing, at least rhytmically speaking. It's more like he feels his way through (read: has to work harder than other composers) and sometimes comes up with a nice tune, but doesn't create a strong impression that the tunes belong together. The first mov. of this symphony is an exception.

Tant qu'on travaille :-) Je suis Chinois et il parait -- selon les autres -- que je n'ai presque pas d'accent. "Presque pas", dommage :) J'adore le baritone. Quant au tenor,je prefere l'interpretation par Kraus (en duet avec McDaniel). Alagna n'est pas a la hauteur. Il a une voix trop "dure" pour ce duet.

Yea u know in fact the baritone now is the best Chinese Baritone in the world. He got the 1st prize in 1997 Domingo Opera competition, even Domingo said he is the best baritone he has ever heard.

I think this is a Chinese song, but not in an opera. This song is about expressing a student's thank, respect, love to his teacher. Since he was born in a farmer family, he never thought of being a musician, but somehow his fate lead him to become a musician, and one of the leading voice teacher in China helped him a lot on the way. So I guess when he sings the song he was so touched by the lyrics.
