Although Du Pre is a great cellist ranking near Rostropovich and Yo-Yo Ma, her best is the Elgar Concerto, which I think is more superior than any of the other's renditions. Du Pre basically dominated the Elgar, but came close to the others on other masterpieces.

It is a progression (stream to the river to the sea). Too much expression and the water no longer flows. If the peace is played abstractly (as bach has been played in the last 100 years from that time) the water becomes cold, or without glory, without spirit. In conclusion, the begining of the peace must be played lightly, like a meandering river.

As with all these things, it's a case of personal opinion. Personally I feel the pacing of Ozawa is slightly wrong, the faster bits too slow and the slower bits too rushed; I prefer the faster recordings. I've posted the Reiner recording as a video response so that people can experience both...

A very nice and precise performance, although I felt that Ozawa takes things a little too slowly and the drama of the piece never really develops. For those who fancy hearing faster, more 'raucous', recordings, I recommenend Reiner with the CSO or Kertesz with the LSO.

The orchestra has changed a lot. The younger players are older. The BSO under Levine is a vastly superior orchestra now, although on the tour, the orchestra was brilliant.

Kraus fue un grande sin dudas, pero los elogios por esta grabaci�n me parecen desmedidos. El tenor est� insoportable: penosos los finales de las frasesm, los agudos son un griter�o y est�n casi destimbrados, con un vibrato molesto y tirantes, y ni hablar de c�mo se infla en las notas por sobre el passaggio. Hay que escucharlo en su mejor �poca. Y si cant� hasta los 70 o 150 a�os, no salgan con ese argumento pueril, la calidad est� por sobre las d�cadas que se tengan encima.

thank God Kraus sang this so the world will know just how greta Pavarotti was. Pavarotti's version towers over this one. Kraus' High C is so weak. Sounds like someone squeezed his nuts...LOL!!....he was probably too old to pull this off at this point but he had to show everyone he still had the High C....anyway this piece did not serve him well....should have stuck with something less demanding

Kraus is one of the best ok, that's for sure. But...he seems to give us a masterclass, to think too much, and to be very concentrated. But these things should not be apparent. His technique is maybe too perfect lol I also think he should have sung legato between C4-C5, and not a direct attack on C5 (that's just a detail anyway).

A beautiful performance. But, I can't help reflect on the great mind that composed it. To bring the agony and victory of such a tumultuous time together and express it so realistically and vividly in a piece which express a startling range of emotions. I wish I had one thousandth of the gift of a Tschaikovsky, or the great composers. Others play their music beautifully, and magnificantly, but they conceived and wrote it. What a gift they had! Why is Oistrakh rushing here and there? What's the hurry? Kogan is wearing only one medal - why is that? Pavel is not wearing tails. Something is odd about this. Energetic performance, though it sounds a little nervous. Maybe they were performing for the Kremlin officials!!!! I think Pavel is still living? He would know.

It's still not quite right I think. I didnt like the cannons very much and the bells were a tad too loud. The rest of the Orchestra did an amazing job. Possibly the best Ive seen for the 1812 overture

Marvelous !!!!!!!! Only Russians could perform it this wonderfull way thank you for posting it. I think the last theme is God save your people instead of the Tzar. Wonderfull acting of the militar band bells and cannons. Bravo!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, but then when this piece was preformed it was standard to supplement the tsarist anthem with "Glory" from Glinka's opera "Ivan Susanin". Ofcourse, it was hypocritical to leave out the tsarist icons, for many russian-imperialist symbols and songs were celibrated in the Stalinist USSR. It sees that since stalin the revolution was drowned and they went back to old great-russian nationalism. And then they dare to call that commmunism... gah...

As I already commented, the fact that the brass band is playing the tsarist anthem is quite remarceble. If I am correct this recording was made just when the USSR was still existing. And in the USSR it was just not done to play the Tsarist anthem. It was even strickly forbitten by soviet law I think. They usually supplemented it with "Glory".

Wow! wonderfull!! The greatest performance I've ever heard of this Tchaicokvskys opus 49!! Can you hear the "God save the Tsar" Choir played by the brass section from 5:12 through 5:30? Absolutely magnificent!!

i've grown to love vengerov's playing. he is very musically mature, watch his masterclasses to see. the negative stuff i think comes from the way he holds the instrument; his neck looks very stiff, and if it's not painful for him it looks like it would hurt me. but look at his bow, and his intonation is flawless, vibrato continuous, sound projection perfect. he makes himself play to fill the concert hall with sound, and he's very successful.

I am not all that clued up on this, but I like what I hear. And I have seen Vengorov before, he is marvelous! His playing has a passion that is sadly lacking in some others....if you watch at about 3.15, he is lost in the music. Isn't that how it's meant to be?

This is one of the least offensive recordings by Vengerov that I've heard. Still, his sound is so careful and heavy and slow and taxed. He just sounds like a student that is pushing himself to his limit at every moment. He never sounds comfortable or like he belongs in the great halls with the great masters. I do accept that he's talented and works very hard but I cannot accept that he is one of the greats. I've heard too many students that play better. That said, he's better than I am.

Scary how good Jackie is on this clip. Also scary that if this performance was 1971 then Jackie was an "oldies" act according to his bios, even though only 37. Is this true? Been listening to the top vocalists for about 25 yrs and only in last couple of yrs starting getting into Jackie's stuff. Guess he's just not as famous as some of the other guys. Can definitely see an argument for putting him in top 2 or 3 male singers all time, if not at the top, with Cooke and Gaye.
